No death threats, no accusations of murder, no copyright infringements
Simple new comments policy. If you are philosophically opposed and/or confused, please err on the side of crawling back under your rock.
Previous threatening emails have been forwarded to abuse@mac.com. I won't hesitate to pursue further threats through more serious channels.

Thanks. Trolls are one thing, direct threats are another.

What's the Apple Abuse division?

Keep a chin up and don't stop. You always have friends in RI.

Lindsay has .Mac mail. Death threats get forwarded to , who then (theoretically, at least) notify the sender's ISP that the sender is violating the terms of their contract by sending out threatening email.

That should read "forwarded to abuse@mac.com".

Whine, whine, whine. Typical woman blogger.

If you are afraid of death threats, maybe you shouldn't put that stupid picture up there or use your real name.
Posted by: Jack | March 25, 2005 at 02:25 AM
Are you for real, dude?

"If you are philosophically opposed and/or confused, please err on the side of crawling back under your rock."
I believe Jack is violating the new comments policy.
Posted by: Petey | March 25, 2005 at 02:35 AM
First of all, Jack seems to be a jackASS.
Lindsay, I'm very sorry to hear that you've been having to deal with death threats. I can't believe that happens...
How absurd and evil.

Okay, this has to be a joke. I mean, no one could really be so moronic as to think, "Hey, you deserve to get death threats if you dare post under your real name." Or even that only people who post under their real name get death threats. Ask Atrios sometime about the monkey mail he got in his pseudonymous blogging days.
Posted by: Mnemosyne | March 25, 2005 at 03:45 AM
It probably goes without saying, but the best part about this is that Lindsay is getting death threats from people who claim that life of any kind has infinite value, so much so that it's worth folding up the Constitutional Democracy tent for good.
And by "best" I mean "what a bunch of fucking tools, Jack foremost among them."

"...from people who claim that life of any kind has infinite value..."
That should probably read "from people who claim that they believe life of any kind has infinite value."

Jack, you're a walking billboard for extending this policy to all flames.

I really appreciate your efforts and thoughts here Lindsay. I'm now a regular visitor. So's Big Media Matt [Y] too, which is how I picked up your latest post on the Schiavo tragedy. After Quinlan, after Curzon we have learned nothing right? We keep on having to fight the same stupid battles again and again, only in this groundhog day, it seems like we get thrown back 200 years in logical & legal arguments for every 10 years we advance in age. Wisdom is not developing here among our leaders any faster than in your average Saudi princelings mullah supported schools.

I (geek that I am) keep my blog links in separate folders -- one for "local" blogs (I live in the Boston area), a "second tier" folder for blogs that I'm getting used to and deciding if I like, and "first tier" for the ones I read regularly and rely on. I discovered your blog as a result of your guest blogging elsewhere, decided it was worth checking out, and put you in my "second tier" folder.
Over the last few days, I've been coming back here more and more -- and this is the clincher. Anyone who's going to piss off wingnuts enough to get threats is "first tier" in my book. You've been moved.
I know, who cares what some random guy thinks about where you rate. I'm just saying, is all.

"So's Big Media Matt"
And there goes the neighborhood. That's where the trolls roll in from...
Matt is big enough to get noticed by some of the bigger right wing blogs, and so along with his regular lefty readers, he'll get a hundred wingnuts who follow links to him, and then five of those wingnuts will follow links from Matt to you, bringing along their death threats, accusations of murder, and copyright infringements.
God, I hate copyright infringements.

BTW, are salacious comments verboten as well? Between the photo, the blogname homophone, and my personal fetish for science chicks, there is a rich vein of salaciousness to be mined here.
Posted by: Petey | March 25, 2005 at 08:19 AM
I came to Lindsay's blog via James Wolcott (who uses his own name and has a line drawing of himself at the top of his blog which must make him another target for you, busy Jack); I have appreciated the intelligence and civility of Majikthise on all topics covered, not just the Schiavo case.
I do hope that reporting these threats will have consequences for the threateners.
Posted by: Aunt Deb | March 25, 2005 at 08:59 AM
Petey,
I'd advise against it. Most salacious comments I've seen posted come off as more creepy and stalkerish than flattering and sweet. I imagine that this is mostly the effect of posting to a BBS, so that even people who normally flirt well come off wrong.
Posted by: rob loftis | March 25, 2005 at 09:12 AM
I think "the deterrent effects of creepy male commenters" is a sorely-neglected relevant factor in the why-not-more-women-in-blogs debate.
Posted by: Eli (creepandblink) | March 25, 2005 at 09:31 AM
Based on Jack's comment about use of your real name and image as justification for threats coupled with the whiney woman comment means he would also suggest that a woman who doesn't want to be raped should not go out in public unless she's covered head to toe and/or that any public figure is setting themselves up for death threats and souldnt complain if they get them. What a schmuck!

Speaking of your photo, I just wanted to say what a great choice it is - there is a "don't fuck with me" attitude expressed beautifully. The Johnny Cash shirt is a contributing factor.

Ignore them. It is just the infantile reaction of someone confronted with someone smarter and more erudite. Not only that your picture probably makes them mad becuase they wouldn't have the nerve or confidence to post theirs.

Threats to injure someone over the internet are a violation of federal law carrying as penalty of up to five years in prison. See 18 U.S.C. § 875(c):
"Whoever transmits in interstate or foreign commerce any communication containing any threat to kidnap any person or any threat to injure the person of another, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both."
Death threats over the internet should not be tolerated. If I were you Lindsay, I would report them to your local FBI office as well as your local United States Attorney.
