Arthur Silber turns in his blogging badge

Posted by Thad

Arthur Silber is someone whose writing Lindsay and I very much admire, so it is with tremendous sadness that I read this post, which Arthur says will be his last.

Not only is Arthur going on indefinite hiatus, he is asking his host to remove his archives next Friday. So you have one week left to read gems like Breaking News: Nero Destroyed by Liberal Media!, Nice Little Propaganda Machine You Got There, Boys, Gay History - Some Personal Notes, Mediocrity is no Defense: Of Literary Trash, And Literary Gems and many, many others.

Get well soon, Arthur. I will miss your voice, and I know Lindsay will as well.

- Thad

We need to let Arthur know how valuable his words were.

Extremely depressing news indeed. I hope he is well.

I don't get why really good bloggers take down their archives when they decide to stop blogging. Hesiod did it to Counterspin too, and it really makes me cross. I'm a librarian. There's so much good writing, why erase it?

Could Arthur become a guest blogger? Is the National Library interested in collecting archival blog materials? Certainly they are a valuable cultural resource that is growing daily. Maybe Google would donate the funds to build this kind of archive?

Arthur has given blanket permission for anyone to reprint any of his work at The Light of Reason provided that the posts are reproduced in their entirety. Perhaps someone can be found (before Friday, Sept 16) who would be willing to host his archives?

That's a worrying post. Does anyone know Arthur personally? He sounds depressed and apt to hurt himself.

I was bummed when I read Arthur's post. I've conributed, not much, but I can understand he has to do what he has to do. I blame the silencing of an important lucid voice on the current unpleasantness.

I will keep Arthur's bookmark.

That's the post of a man in deep depression. If anyone knows him personally or his family they'd best take steps.

"No one listens, and soon it seems you scream and no one hears."

I wish we could convey to him how concerned we are about him, without stepping directly on his toes.

I have sent Mr. Silber a long, carefully considered e mail, encouraging him to continue blogging. I only hope he will accept it in the spirit it was given. I'll let you know if I get a reply.

Please do, ghostcatbce. I'd like to write to him, but as you say, he's deep in a depression. Being more than a little melancholic myself, I know how hard it is to communicate with anyone in that sort of funk. I'd like to say here though that I'm a regular reader, and will miss him.
