Katrina death toll
The unofficial death toll from Hurricane Katrina rose above 1300 on Friday.
Others who need our help and rememberance:
It's not yet known how many people in Guatemala were killed by mudslides set off by Hurricane Stan, though it is estimated that hundreds have died and thousands more have been left homeless. [NYT]
The death toll from Saturday's massive Central Asian earthquake hovers near 20,000. [NYT]

So much for the complaints about N.O. not being properly evacuated.

In the final analysis the NOLA death toll figures will probably be about as reliable as the governments unemployment figures... NOT!

At times like these, I believe that Singer's "Famine, Affluence, and Morality" is important to reread.
"I begin with the assumption that suffering and death from lack of food, shelter, and medical care are bad...."
It's an article that changed my life.

Peter Unger's Living High and Letting Die makes similar arguments, based on Singer's article, but with slightly different (and more involved) reasoning. It's not online AFAIK, but I encourage you to seek it out.
