I have seen the weird ad all over the leftest blogs I read. Porn for "ladies" too, how nice. Great to see us finally getting equal treatment. This is what we fight for, to be be manipulated by sleazy porn-pushers just like the guys. Thank you Susan B. Anthony

I'm very pro-porn. I just think it's funny that they chose the Bada Bing! sign from the Sopranos as the icon of porno-for-ladies.

So what would make a sensible porn icon for heterosexual women?
Posted by: togolosh | December 11, 2005 at 06:57 PM
"So what would make a sensible porn icon for heterosexual women? "
A wallet full of cash.
A 9 inch cock.
A phallic pickle between two scoops of ice cream.
A tampon.
I dunno.

Ron Jeremy is the man ;)

This sign says: All women are lesbians.
How is that not just standard male het pr0n again? Where's the Beefcake?

Bah humbug!
Posted by: ghostcatbce | December 11, 2005 at 08:28 PM
i think they're just trying to cover all their bases. they assume the guys will pay attention to the ad because of the busty outline and by addressing the caption to "ladies" they're hoping that women pay attention too.

The correct image would be MF hardcore.
I'm not positive about the position. There are lots of contenders.
Posted by: Gary Sugar | December 11, 2005 at 09:21 PM
What they mean is that it's also for lesbians and bisexuals with unrealistic body standards.
Posted by: Eli | December 11, 2005 at 09:56 PM
I'm not saying the pic is NOT for women--but if you're doing an advertising campaign, you've got to make your icon scream "For --TARGET GROUP--" I just think MSNBC's effort seems a little silly by that standard.
Something that evoked MF hardcore would have been better--or even something evoking less stereotypical lesbian action. That's hard to do if you have a prior creative commitment to neon imagery, I realize.

Didn't work at all on me. Saw the nekkid lady and immediately assumed had it had shit-all to do with me. Thanks for pointing that out.
Posted by: Amanda Marcotte | December 11, 2005 at 10:39 PM
Yeah, what the fuck? The picture looks like the same ole shit for guys.
I gave up on straight porn after a couple of tries when I realized all the men in straight porn were old and/or ugly. Straight women have to go with gay men's porn.

There *is* intelligent porn for hetero women, and I know mature 40+ women who enjoy porn videos. Hell, the Berman sisters counsel women to watch porn to stimulate their response. Candida Royalle is a woman who makes some good movies with female viewers in mind, see www.royalle.com. As for the icon, how about a man and a woman embracing and kissing?

While it was a dumb choice of images, I do totally respect a prior aesthetic commitment to neon imagery. Also imagery associated with mudflaps. There are so many things delightfully sleazy about mudflaps, starting with the word itself. It has the mud in it, and the flaps. And there's something wonderfully direct about a big slab of rubber, something you could just flap on on the ground--slap!--and start going at it on.

Porn for women?
A man who talks. And listens.
A baby. Yeah baby.

Candida Royalle rules.

Am I the only person who pronounces the name of this blog "magic fist"?
(and stopped by this venue only looking for the video)

No no--"Magic Thighs."
Posted by: 1984 Was Not a Shopping List | December 12, 2005 at 11:10 PM
I assumed it was an image from mudflaps before noting the Bada Bing provenance; which of course refers to mudflaps anyway.

Oh, for shit's sake.

What're you, ultra-french? Pronounce it with a gutteral (titter) german accent, heavy on the "feest" with a silent inverse schwa on the e. (not so much a "t" sound but a running out of breath)
I kid, I kid - I like your interpretation. Do you have any "Magic Thighs" literature I can subscribe to? Podcast?
-- I do totally respect a prior aesthetic commitment to neon imagery.
I love that line, I wish it was mine. So I'm stealing it. Here. Now that's bold.
Has anyone ever done any serious research on the sociological significance of both the mudflap icon and ancient fertility idols? I suspect, corrected for time, space and gender, they are functionally equivalent but as a practicing part-time pornographer, I would think that, wouldn't I.

The sign says, "Porn Valley." Of course the silhouette is female:
The Valley Spirit never dies
It is named the Mysterious Female.
And the doorway of the Mysterious Female
Is the base from which Heaven and Earth sprang.
It is there within us all the while;
Draw upon it as you will, it never runs dry.

> the Bada Bing provenance;
Just next to Al-Nasiriyah, right turn after the Soleimani prefecture.
