New military recruiting anthem: "Sick of Life"

geometry of death, originally uploaded by deborah lattimore.

Jane Hamsher of Firedoglake:

Godsmacked currently has the #1 album on the chart.  Their song Awake has been used for there years by the military for recruiting commercials, and they recently signed another contract for three years for the use of the song Sick of Life.

I guess there's something to be said for truth in advertising.

So far, 2406 American troops have died in Iraq.

It may come as a surprise, but soldiers have died in other wars also.

Most soldiers and enlistees are aware of this fact, if you can believe it. They're not sick of life at all. They're brave and they serve with great courage.

Or so they think. We know that they're idiots and dupes, right?

How nice to sit back in Park Slope and Berkeley and sneer at them, like usclever cartoonists and bloggers.

We know that they're idiots and dupes, right?

Well, I didn't, until Lindsay told me that they were (in exactly those words, no less). Being a liberal, I'm too feeble-minded to know what to think until someone in Park Slope or Berkeley tells me.

Ah, don't I know it. Hey where does Ted Rall live anyway? He'd fit in very well with the Slopies.

I take it they're only making use of the instrumental part...

Lyrics:
Paralyzed.
Nothing's getting through to me.
Hypnotized from all my surroundings.
I wanna be something I could never be.
I wanna say things that I could never say.
Yeah, I'm gonna do it again!
Sick of my life.
I'm tired of everything in my life.
Dragged down.
Rubbing my face in the ground.
No time for the undecided.
I wanna know why I've always felt alone.
And I wanna love.
Why am I untouchable?
Yeah, I'm gonna do it again!
Sick of my life.
I'm tired of everything in my life.
I never wanted to be sick of my life.
I'm tired of everything in my life.

Well.

I'm not criticizing the soldiers, I'm criticizing the dumbass ad agency for choosing a recruiting song about wanting to die. I'm sure they got paid big bucks to do it. You know, government waste.

I'm surprised they don't license the Cure song "Killing an Arab" (There's actually a rockin' version by the Electric Hellfire Club). Maybe too close to home?

I mean, the purpose isn't to die for your country, but make the other bastard die for his, right?

Because that Cure song is referencing a French novel, of course.

cass, the ad agency would be even stupider to use the instrumental version.have you ever listened to godsmack? they blow chunks. they're so obviously in it for the dough.

as a former pro-wrestling afficionado, i am aware of their terrible terrible TERRIBLE music. guess where else the army is advertising. i heard on these oh-so-reliable internets that they're vinnie mcmahon's third largest sponsors or something(after fat burners and fast foods) but i could be wrong. they might be his biggest...

The Army does many dumb things...like coming up with the slogan "Army Strong". It was way to easy to turn it into ARMY WRONG, as in "there's WRONG and there's ARMY WRONG, the strength to resist today the courage to resist tomorrow."
