The white supremacist plot to kill Barack Obama
Three men were arrested near Denver early Sunday for allegedly plotting to assasinate Barack Obama. Police found rifles, a bulletproof vest, walkie-talkies, ammunition and various disguises.
The three had uttered racist threats against Obama.
The authorities are downplaying the threat the three men posed to the candidate. They're spinning their utterances as the rantings of drug addicts. The men were high on methamphetamine when they were apprehended, according to media reports.
What do you have to do to be considered a credible alleged would-be white supremacist assassin these days?
Getting pulled over with a telescopic rifle in a vehicle rented in someone else's name and threatening the candidate apparently isn't enough.

"What do you have to do to be considered a credible alleged would-be white supremacist assassin these days?"
Be Arab or a Muslim. And that's all.

The white supremacist/neo-nazi sites have been buzzing all over this.
My guess? It'll be the third attempt before this starts getting serious play in the media.
And the closer we get to November (and the more ass Obama kicks), the more I expect violence against liberals and minorities to rise.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

The Bush Administration's US Attorney Troy Eid charged a man for sending a threatening letter to John McCain.
Eid didn't show the same concern about whether the threat against McCain was a "true threat" that he did in deciding not to charge the people who talked about killing Obama for their plans.

The authorities aren't the only ones downplaying the threat the men posed to Obama. This commentary by Pacifica's Robert Knight is both amusing and incisive.

Grow up, all of you.
The investigation continues, and police, quite properly, don't always say what their suspicions are.

Mr. Eid appears to have a very short memory. A possible 25 year sentence for an incarcerated man with a postage stamp and no charges at all for those with a plan, proximity and sniper gear... What has he been smoking?

"The investigation continues, and police, quite properly, don't always say what their suspicions are."
Of course they don't. On the other hand, the posters here are recalling all of the investigations the FBI and Homeland Security have done into Vegans and peace groups and the like. And how could you forget all of those breathless news reports about those hapless "jihadis" in FL that the FBI coerced into "plotting" against the country.
No need to grow up. On the other hand, maybe you need to get your irony meter and snark measuring stick adjusted.

The authorities are deliberately blurring the distinction between the threat posed by the conspirators and the existence of a plot. If media reports are reliable, it's likely that these guys were involved in a concerted, planned effort to kill Obama.
The suspects had been staying in hotel rooms in the area for the past several days, rented a truck under a pseudonym, acquired bullet proof vests, walkie-talkies, two sighted rifles (one of which was a sniper rifle). Barring some very big misunderstanding, it seems these guys were planning to assassinate Obama. Like the Sears Tower plotters, they weren't well-placed to succeed. Doesn't mean there wasn't a plot.

I don't doubt for a second that there was a plot. Or that it sure looks to me that these guys were seeking to assassinate Obama.
They were arrested very recently, so my only comment about the police here is "good job". Its way way way too soon to question anything that they do or don't do.

The poor guys over at the Secret Service undoubtedly have their hands full what with potential Bush/Cheney assassins including any friends and family of the four thousand plus US military killed, along with the hundred or more thousand Iraqi dead, plus the maimed, plus the coalition soldiers wasted, plus any number of other people pissed off at the BushCo crowd. Dick doesn’t live in a bunker for nothing. Then there are the innumerable native racists that can’t bear the thought of a black president. – How many jokes have I heard now along the lines of the White House rose garden being replaced by a watermelon patch? Too many to count even this early.
The clowns currently in the White House may be too obtuse to understand that an Obama assassination would precipitate a category 1000 hurricane, but I don’t doubt that the folks in the Secret Service, whose job it is to think about it 24/7, do. The unfortunate part is that the necessary secrecy contributes to the overall police/security state zeitgeist.

Why do I suspect that the guys that were caught were only the decoys?

Mukasey's fingerprints are all over the downplaying of the assassination threat. He's every bit the Republican operative that Gonzales was.

I really do worry about Obama's safety. I hate to get all War on Terror about it, but they need to step up the security majorly. That group of flunkies got busted, but there are surely people out there much more capable of pulling something like this off. IMHO it would be one of the worst things that could happen to this country right now -- whether or not he is going to win -- not to mention it would be awful for him, his family, etc.

Ever since he began his race, very many in the black community have been afraid for his safety.
He has received more than normal security for some time, and properly so.

I'd like to know who is behind this threat, because there's no way these three doped up idiots thought this up by themselves. Somebody's funding them.

Last night after his speech, you could lip read Barack asking Michelle if she was alright.
They know he's a target.
