Osama bin Laden's secret weapon to destroy the world: Good advice

Osama bin Laden is speaking out against climate change:

"The effects of global warming have touched every continent. Drought and deserts are spreading, while from the other floods and hurricanes unseen before the previous decades have now become frequent," bin Laden said in the audiotape, aired on the Arab TV network Al-Jazeera.

The terror leader noted Washington's rejection of the Kyoto Protocol aimed at reducing greenhouse gases and painted the United States as in the thrall of major corporations that he said "are the true criminals against the global climate" and are to blame for the global economic crisis, driving "tens of millions into poverty and unemployment."

What a devilishly clever plan to destroy the world.

Bin Laden surely knows that if he rails against climate change, Americans will reflexively champion global warming. Temperatures will soar, decadent Western civilizations will bake and crumble and their parched ruins will be swept away by rising seas. The earth will be scourged by famine, pestilence, war, and plagues too numerous to name. At last, Bin Laden will seize his chance to usher in the medieval Caliphate of his dreams.

Don't let the bearded villain get away with it. Call your member of congress today and demand action on climate change.

Comments

If Osama Bin Laden were alive, he could appear on video tape. I don't buy the right wing theory theories that video cameras don't work in caves, or even that he's living in a cave.

He hasn't produced a video since early 2001.

He's dead. There is no reason to believe otherwise.

The truth always lies between two extremes. You say Osama's been dead 10 years, and the intelligence community says he's still alive, so in truth he must have been dead 5 years.

Or, maybe he was dead for five years and then alive again for the past five. There is no reason to believe otherwise.

You're right, the recent pictures of Bin Laden with projected aging look eerily zombie-like.

OMG, what's next? Bin laden defending women's right or interplanetary exploration policy?

heh. He should stfu already.

I think the Europeans need to take the lead in global warming, by trade sanctions against polluters. I have absolutely no hope for the U.S. leading on this issue, due to the pervasive corporate corruption of the government.

As far as Bin Laden is concerned, he'll seize on any issue he perceives the US being wrong on. But, this thing about global warming is insignificant. What Bin Laden needs is for the war on terror to be redefined as a war on Islamics. That will increase the pool to recruit from. And, towards that end, he has no greater ally than the Republican party.

The Europeans would have to impose trade sanctions on the US, Canada, Russia, China, and India. In effect, they'd be putting sanctions on themselves rather than on the rest of the world. Hasn't Bush taught us that unilateralism leads nowhere?

he lives but surely afraid. Does he is enemy number one. can we own enemies. he's one man.dezmembrari autoasigurari auto

Osama has probably won over a whole new audience in the Global Warming True Believer crowd.

OBL is somewhere in the id of all anti American leftists. At some level, they love him, savvy marketer that he is.

The real problem isn't that leftist like Osama Bin Laden. It's that most "conservatives" actually believe they do.

That's a recipe for Civil War.

I have some violent heros, Robespierre, Emma Goldman, Ho Chi Minh. Bin Laden isn't among them. As an atheist, I detest religious fundamentalists of all stripes, be they Christian, Jewish or Islamic.

But none of that will convince "The Phantom". He'll continue to believe his Fox News talking points, whatever I say. So eventually, if civil society breaks down, there may be violence between people like me and people like him. But I guarantee you, in my heart, I'll be thinking of 8/10/1793 and not 9/11/2001.

I sincerely hope it never comes to that. But if it does, it will have been years of eliminationist talk by people like "The Phantom" that will have paved the road to hell.

Fox News was a necessary corrective to the all liberal all the time media that preceded it.

But I do not watch it that often, and don't think it does an adequate job of reporting the news, esp international news which I get by grazing the NY Times, Economist, BBC World, and France 24 among a wide net of other sources.

Atheist, your prejudices didn't play out so well did they?

Hey Phantom. Nothing I say is going to change your mind about anything. You're going to believe that anybody who criticizes American militarism is secretely in his deepest heart of hearts a potential "terrorist". So be it. I can reverse years of brainwashing with a blog comment. You've volunteered for the Neocon thought police. And you're serving in the First Cyber Division 101 Fighting Keyboarders. Hope for both our sakes it never goes beyond that.

Ciao Baby.

Nothing you say will change anyone's mind until you start making some sense

In the climate change denialist minds there exist only two possibilities:

1. Mr. bin Laden is part of the global conspiratorial cabal of leftist scientists, unreconstructed Marxists, America haters, cap and trade profiteers. scaremongering journalists, Al Gore, and assorted other eco-pirates who are fully aware that there is no such thing as human caused climate change and are spreading the lie that there is for their own deeply cynical and loathsome purposes, or

2. Mr. Bin Laden is sincere and is part of the mob of whining dimwitted suckers, hippies, hand-wringing, chicken-little, tree-hugging eco-pansies who have bought the grift sold to them by group 1 above.

The denialists are smarter than you or I. Their bullshit detectors are much more sensitive than ours. They know that worrywart “scientists” notwithstanding there is no evidence for nor reason for concern about global warming until the shores of the Arctic Ocean and the Antarctic continent are lined with cacti.

Relax, turn up the thermostat, and tune back to FOX News. We're all going to be fine.

Phantom, you're not stupid, you're quite capable of forming your own opinion regarding global warming without the help of FOX News. The literature is out there, it has not been concealed. Virtually all peer reviewed publications that have any bearing on the matter can be accessed online. You may have to pay for the pdf files but the abstracts are free. Google scholar is an excellent literature search tool and you don't even have to get up out of bed to use it. You can find any book via WorldCat and have your local public library put it in your hands with interlibrary loan. If you have access to a university library or someone you know can lend you the off-campus password (yeah it's not exactly cricket) you can search with SCOPUS or ISI web of science or a dozen other search engines.

A portal for climate change related technical literature is here:
http://biblio.pacinst.org/biblio/index.php

The National Science Foundation has some stuff on climate change:
http://www.nsf.gov/news/special_reports/climate/intro_background.jsp

Think for yourself. The folks at FOX News might be right but you'll never know if you don't do some homework on your own.

Phantom, the far leftists I've read and argued with don't really care much for Bin Laden. They support violent people who are actually leftist or talk the leftist game, but Bin Laden has never done this until now - on the contrary, the Taliban was not an economically left-wing regime, and Bin Laden's rhetorical attacks on the West were on liberal culture and secularism, not capitalism or even consumerism.

Most radical leftists today support Hugo Chavez, who does talk the leftist game, and a large minority also apologizes for Ahmadinejad, whose domestic economics is leftist-populist. In 2004 you could even find people in the Guardian defending Putin, though Putin's nationalism and realist rhetoric have since extinguished remaining pro-Russian sentiment in the Western left. But Bin Laden never enjoyed this popularity - he never wasted his time appealing to Western leftists. The reaction of the far left to him has been denial more than approval.
