Win Back Respect

Mark Kleiman is a man of many talents. In addition to being a scholar of criminal justice, and a storied member of the Ancient and Hermetic Order of the Shrill, he's also a good fundraiser. At any rate, he convinced me.

But if you're motivated right now to want to spend a few more bucks to increase our chances of having a President we don't have to be ashamed of, let me draw to your attention what just might be the winning video of this campaign.

The spot shows the sister of a soldier who died in the Iraq war commenting on Bush's hideous "no weapons here" joke, along with footage of Bush, in black tie, making it.

It's four long years of disgust in thirty seconds, and there's evidence it might be effective, even at this late date:

Pollsters Greenberg, Quinlan & Rosner tested the ad and found that after viewing it just once, there was an almost unprecedented 8 point gross shift away from Bush in voting intentions among the 750-person test sample. It also badly eroded support for Bush across a wide range of measures including confidence in his Iraq policy and key measures of character including honesty and sharing the concerns of ordinary people.

Okay, that's not an entirely disintersted opinion; presumably Greenburg, Quinlan, and Rossner did that work for the ad's sponsor, Win Back Respect. But the numbers seem, to these untutored eyes, pretty damned impressive, and viewing the spot makes me believe that it could cut through the clutter and make an impact even at this late date.

Win Back Respect isn't an outfit I'm familiar with, but if Wesley Clark is working with them that's good enough for me.

I just sent them a thousand bucks.

Watch the hard hitting TV spot that lays bare the face of moral depravity:

I feel kinda lame next to Mark's grand, but I put in $25. I don't know how much we can do with ads with so little time, but we must do our best.

My contribution was comparatively paltry, too. But from each according to his or her ability and all that...
