Jerry Falwell in Critical Condition

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) -- The Rev. Jerry Falwell was hospitalized in critical condition Tuesday, battling his second case of viral pneumonia in just five weeks, hospital and church officials said.

Falwell, 71, was admitted to Lynchburg General Hospital shortly before midnight Monday suffering from "respiratory arrest,'' the hospital said in a statement.

He was put on a ventilator and stabilized but remained in critical condition, the hospital said.

"He's resting comfortably and in stable condition,'' said Ron Godwin, Falwell's executive assistant. "It's a recurrence of the viral pneumonia.''

Falwell, the founder of the Moral Majority and Liberty University, had left the hospital March 4 after 13 days, spending part of the time on a ventilator.

In a recent interview with The Associated Press, Falwell said he was feeling much better, but still recovering from his hospital stay.

Falwell had been in the pulpit Easter Sunday at Thomas Road Baptist Church and appeared in good health, said the Rev. Dave Randlett, a senior associate pastor.

"He always looks `up' so you wouldn't know if he wasn't'' feeling well, Randlett said. "He was very optimistic.''

I may disagree with everything he says, but I do hope he recovers soon.

Still, I do think it's rather ironic that this happened only a few days after Easter Sunday, where he compared his recent bout of pneumonia to Terri Schiavo's condition.

Ditto. I've tried to avoid that term in recent years...but it applies here.

schadenfreude

(I wonder what his eulogy would sound like. Bombastic religious pretension I suppose.)

I'm afraid Mr. Falwell must be considered an outsider in a field that includes not just Terri Schiavo but such foot-in-the-grave perennials as the Pope and Prince Rainier of Monaco. His chances for a place on the podium at the Pearly Gates finish line seem slim at best.

Interestingly, I don't hear any of the nuts who blame all bad things on God's opinion of Gays and Abortion in the US that maybe God is trying to give him a message...

Since no one else has said it yet (and because I will always be "that guy" if given the opportunity)...

Couldn't happen to a nicer fella.

Complications from advanced AIDS would constitute proof of a God. Just my opinion

Oh the horror.
I just had a momentary flash of Falwell in a vegetative state, and all of us having to endure this hypocrisy again.

Falwell in a vegetative state?

Horror?

Couldn't happen to a more deserving fellow, if you ask me.

Wouldn't wish it on him, I guess, but bad things happen, right? i.e. tom delay's birth.

His chances for a place on the podium at the Pearly Gates finish line seem slim at best.

Well I guess that's what Mr. Falwell gets for believing in a vengeful spiteful god who won't let people whom Mr. Falwell dislikes have a place on the podium at the Pearly Gates finish line. Errrr, hey, wait a minute.......

Falwell's already in a vegetative state, if you ask me.

I could have a more intelligent conversation with Terri Schiavo.

I may disagree with everything he says, but I do hope he recovers soon.

Not me.

DIE YOU FUCKER!

And I hope it fucking hurts, too.

Not me.

Me neither. The post-9/11 "You made this happen" remark alone is more than enough for me to think of the man as a putrid stain on our public sphere.

I don't rejoice in his suffering any more than I would in any other being's. I also will not offer "best wishes for a speedy recovery."

Me, I'm hoping for a life-changing near-death-experience. Falwell wakes up to proclaim his love for each and every member of the human race, gives his money to the poor, divulges enough information for prosecution of Robertson's diamond millions, and preaches tolerance between all God's children.

But I'm not holding my breath.

Me, I'm hoping for a life-changing near-death-experience

Personally, I'd be even happier if he proclaimed he's been living a "homosexual lifestyle" for the past fifty years.

Only the good die young.
I wish he'd hurry to his reward.
