Uncle Sam needs comix

US Army is looking for a few good graphic novelists:

The US military is planning to win the hearts of young people in the Middle East by publishing a new comic.

An advertisement on the US government's Federal Business Opportunities website is inviting applications for someone to develop an "original comic book series". [BBC]

Set in the Middle East in the "near future," the series will chronicle the endearing escapades of the US security forces in the region.

A week ago, I wrote about the military's program to recruit high schoolers, and based on today's Doonesbury it looks like Gary Trudeau is about to take it on. Now, Majikthise reports that Unlce Sam wants a few good graphic novelists to produce a m... [Read More]

I was going to write an acerbic little soundbite about the tragic comedy of efforts like these...When I thought about it I realized that's the worst reaction possible. This problem is much more institutional... [Read More]

Well, my husband does need work, but I don't think he needs it that badly...

They should get some of the artists and writers who did/do the cartoon skits on SNL:

"Agents Jesus Jones and Mohammed Miller unite to free the Middle East from tyranny."

They could even have special rings or something.

Archie & Jughead join the armed forces?

Just as the alterego of Captain America transformed by shouting "Shazam!", perhaps the new hero could acquire superpowers by shouting "Allahu akbar!"

Captain America versus General Jihad!!! Cover by Alex Ross.

And if you want to go all the way with it have an homage of the original Captain America cover by Jack Kirby, with Osama or Saddamn in Hitler's place.

Oh and you were thinking of Captain Marvel, VKW.

What about Wonder Woman you chauvinists. She could deflect roadside bombs with her bracelets. Ooh and she could protect Iraqi families from the accidental fire of American G.I.s.

What with the success of the military's juvenile id outreach (aka glorified video games), the step to comic books is unsurprising. After all, how else to entice burgeoning population of young men in an area devoid of X-Box?

With Dubya as commander & chief? Puh-leeze, Diana King would be high-tailing back to what's left of the Amazon!

I think they should get Art Spiegelman to do their propaganda comix. And they should give him complete creative freedom.

The Right would be wise to ignore my advice, and will do so, albeit more because I'm an obscure commentator than because they're wise.

Isn't Fox News already kind of a comic book? How you can be more cartoonish than Bill O'Reilly, I do not know.

Jenna:

Take a look at the guy in the picture of on the right (I think it's James Hartline). He's pretty cartoonish looking (albeit as a villian)

HA HA HA HA HA! *snort* Oh, wait...you're serious. Yeah, that'll work - DoD propaganda. What a bunch of maroons!
