Holy book abuse, redux

The Rude Pundit has an excellent post on the Koran abuse scandal:

The Rude Pundit doesn't suffer fundamentalists gladly. It doesn't matter if you're a Bible-thumpin' Christian, a Koran-riotin' Muslim, or a ripped-to-shit flag waver, you can take your strict adherence to your religious and/or nationalistic code and, well, flush it down the toilet. Because, frankly, if you're willing to go nutzoid over the desecration of a book, then you're someone who's willing to oppress real, living people - maybe that's forcing women to always be accompanied by a man, maybe it's not allowing gay people to marry each other or adopt kids, maybe it's re-electin' a lyin' sack of shit to the presidency. However it forces you to behave, it's gonna end up screwin' someone else's freedoms over. So fuck you.

Here's the Common Dreams article that roused the wrath of The Rude One: Quran Desecration: Far Worse than Abu Ghraib by M. A. Muqtedar Khan.

Of course, just because a belief is bizarre doesn't excuse exploiting it torture or humiliation.

Lindsay points out the Rude Pundit says it's a "Goddamn shame you put so much belief into a replaceable inanimate object." He's right, while it is rude, inappropriate, & unnecessarily incendiary to go out of your way to trash a religious or... [Read More]

That doesn't necessarily follow. And it depends on what you mean by "nutzoid." Weren't at least some of the protests peaceful?

The peaceful protesters aren't being nutzoid, though. They were just protesting another huge insult from an occupying power.

If anybody started rioting because of holy book desecration, having been kind of non-plussed by sexual abuse and murder, that would be nutzoid. Khan seems to be arguing that a lot of people literally believe something along those lines. I hope he's wrong, because that would be crazy.

Obviously not everyone who was angry about the US abuses was violent. Also, the White House played up the Koran desecration angle as a stick to beat Newsweek. The protesters were angry about a whole lot of things. The worst riots were probably provoked by Pakistani intelligence agents, who were looking for an opportunity, Koran or no Koran.

opportunity is the key here. i agree with rude pundit, however it (the desecration of the representation of an ideology - koran, american flag, crucifix (think serrano)) is a rallying cry (by many nutzoids as well as opportunists - some well justified) to launch protests (or more) rooted in a religious ideology. it's a perfect excuse, nothing more for many who are outraged.

Has anyone tried flushing a Koran down a toliet? I doubt one would go down mine.

You can stick a Koran in your toilet, and flush, even thogh it won't go down...

Hey, now we can all flush holy books down the toilet at flushaholybook.com
