D'oh! I took a bribe
WaPo headline: Cunningham Friends Baffled By His Blunder Into Bribery
Blundering into bribery. Don't you hate it when that happens? You're at a party, having a good time, and the next thing you know you've accepted a 42-foot yacht? Or, a defense contractor invites you in to "check out his stereo" and, well, one thing leads to another, and suddenly you're walking out of there with $100,000 in cash?
Shorter WaPo: While it may not necessarily be OK if you are a Republican, it's certainly understandable.

Happens to me all the time! I'm tripping over yachts.... I wish.

Oh, who needs a fucking yacht? Or any number of conspicuous consumer items? These people are pathetic. They greedily try to acquire a bunch of shit in order to feel superior.
And Cunningham is a closeted faggot. Icing on the sick cake.

Reminds me of the Irish pol who found an envelope with several 100k Euros on his doorstep and told the inquiry he had no idea how it got there.

Actually, I think getting to keep his taxpayer funded pension is even worse than the bribery.

Not to mention the health plan. I'd take the healthplan Congresscritters get over the pension anyday.

Perhaps Cunningham had been drugged with Rohypnol didn't know what was happening. Or maybe ecstacy, making him love and trust everyone. The poor guy.

And he walks into a bar. Then the rabbi says...

As Dan Savage would say, "How'd that happen?"

Things would be much funner the Roman way, where political bribes went straight to the people instead of being imbezzled by the middle managers.

The subhead is almost as good:
"Navy Ace-Turned-Congressman Didn't Act Like Big Spender"
He was just a regular guy. On weekends, we'd grab a sixpack and some bait from the market and go out fishing on his 42 foot yacht.
