"Senior official" says DSCC won't back Lieberman's Independent bid
John Byrne of The Raw Story is reporting that "senior Democratic party official" confirmed that the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) is unlikely to back Joe Lieberman of Connecticut for Senate in 2006 if he loses the August 8th primary race to Ned Lamont.
“It is likely that the DSCC will back the winner of the Democratic primary in Connecticut,” the party official told RAW STORY, requesting anonymity because of the sensitivity of the race. [Raw Story]
So far, Byrne's using an anonymous source, so we'll have to take this report as preliminary. However, Byrne promises us more details soon.
I sincerely hope that the DSCC and its chair Chuck Schumer will pledge to support the winner of the Democratic Senate primary in the upcoming
Senate race. Anything less would be a complete dereliction of their duty. Since when do Democrats pay good money for a Democratic campaign committee to back candidates who oppose Democratic candidates after being rejected by Democratic primary voters?
Gee, it's so nice of them to support the winner of the democratic primary.

It's not a done deal yet, I'm afraid. If I had to bet, I'd say that Schumer will knuckle under on this one. Even HRC insists that the DSCC should do the right thing if the time comes, no questions asked. It's an outrage that we even have to speculate.

Yes, indeed it is, an outrage that any contribution, even my paltry $200, might have any chance whatsoever of going to anyone other than a Democratic candidate. If that possibility does come to pass, I am requesting a refund for having been solicited under false pretenses.

Heh. Amusing that they have to spell it out.

Regardless of the DSCC's decision, Joementum is going to fuck up the whole election for Lamont. With Democrats like him, who needs Republicans?
OT: Who won the state fossil contest, Lindsay, and what fabulous prizes will you be giving to the winners? I hope it's a free one-year subscription to Majikthise.

Good news, if it turns out to be true. I think Joe "mentum" Lieberman made it a whole lot harder for his backers with his weasely "I get a free do-over" campaign. On the other hand, I'm sure the idea of being able to ignore primary voters really appeals to a lot of party 'leaders'.

what the hell is up with that "it is likely that" shit? is it so hard for the democratic party to say it will support whoever wins the democratic primary without qualification? why do they have to use any weasel words like "it is likely"?
i hope this really does mean they will back lamont if he wins. but if that's what this anonymous official was saying, why not just say they will back him?

To be honest, since the media have decided that Lamont (since he is backed by scary -- i.e. doing the job the media's supposed to do and the media are green with envy -- blogs -- see, even the word sounds scary) is the second coming of Karl Marx, if the DSCC supports Lamont, we can look forward to endless "the DSCC is way to the left of the mainstream" bullcrap from the media. OTOH, if the DSCC doesn't support Lamont, we can look forward to endless "the Democrats are too disorganized to run the country" and "Lamont and the blogs that support him are so far to the left that even the left-leaning DSCC won't support him". Of course, right wing special interest groups are continually ignored by the MSM (Club for Growth, anyone?) ...
No matter what, the media will figure out a way to help Joe Lieberman make the rest of the Dems. look bad ...

We're pretty good at doing that ourselves.
