I know I'm a wimp for this, but I started to watch this when it was broadcast but had to stop. Too bloody upsetting.
Why is it the minute you're accused of a crime, no matter how petty, you stop being human?

Cornelia Grumman has a series of editorials about child abuse in
the Cook Country juvenile justice system. She was featured on CSPAN this morning.

It's a screen cap from the Katrina documentary. I definitely see the resemblance. Heh.

the hell with orleans parish prison. i being a new orleans resident can tell you from personal experience, the place is aweful. i mean jail is in no way supposed to be a fun place but the inhumane way the prisoners were being treated was very disturbing. prisoner neglect is one of the biggest issues i came across during my stay. the guards would leave you in an overpopulated "tank" cell with no chance of getting processed for at least 10 hours. food and drink is a very rare occasion in the tank cells as well. toilets covered in feces and concentrated vomit residue would describe the "facilities" and the overall psychological vibe withon these walls.
anywsay, i just wanted to say a few words on OPP. all jails suck. no one wants to be locked in a cage by a higher authority, that's a given... but i personally think a dog in a fucking kennle (or is it kettle?) is recieving better treatment than the prisioners in new orleans. so be careful vacationing in nola. it's very easy to end up in opp. most people think that its mardi gras all yearlong and one can get as "smashed" as s/he wishes and run the ruckus.... to sum it up, the cops are crooked here. its better to have a conflict with a criminal here than a cop. phony police reports and devastating poverty are a recipe for disaster. so watch yourself

Because out "Justice" system is fucked! I am an attorney but have seen first hand now how bad it truly is with a family member wrongly accused of a crime. Thanks goodness he is white and has the financial means to mount a defense! If he were a minority and poor, he would get convicted of a crime he did not commit.

And to think that De Tocqueville came to America to study the enlightened and humane prison system. Ah, well...

I was arrested on Bourbon St. a week before mardi gras I wasnt read my rights and was only guilty of having a good time and asking the police for directions. They arrested me and i was thrown in OPP. It took 12 hours to book me and after i was bonded it took another 6 hours. The "tank" reaked of urine and was full of crack heads and dope fiends. I'm white and was treated better by the inmates than the "guards" who couldn't give a shit about you. OPP a hell hole. If your from out of town like i was be careful and dont approch police no matter the circumstance.
