Liberal blogger fundraising for Iraq reporting
Terry Welch of the Nitpicker has big plans for 2007. Welch plans to upgrade the blog, move into podcasting, and take a reporting trip to Iraq or Afghanistan. (Welch is a veteran who served in Afghanistan.)
Welch is currently working on a series about writers who were right on Iraq. His latest interview subject is Paul Krugman.
Please help the Nitpicker go where Jonah Goldberg fears to tread.
Writers who were right about the war? How about the millions of people in the US and worldwide who marched against it in mass demonstrations that were blacked out by the MSM? It didn't take some special insight only pundits possess to see it was a sham that would turn into a disaster. It just took being a little bit informed.
OK, OK, fine. It's a worthy pursuit. But it irks me a little because it lets people who weren't right off the hook. I understand that there are people who were genuinely convinced by the war propaganda and only later understood what was going on. But there was ample evidence ahead of time of Bush & Co's deceit and corruption. The media wanted a war to cover, whether or not it was right or prudent. Why not focus on those who weren't right, and make them answer for their role in this mess?

Lindsay, you do not owe me any support or recognition for my efforts to get to Iraq in 2007, by any means. Nevertheless I'd like to note have been trying to raise funds and discussing my plans since August 2005.
Maybe it's my fault for having thus far been ineffective in making my voice heard over the din-- seeing this post is a useful reminder to post an update about my plans.
Perhaps I will see Nitpicker there, and we will both make it back safely-- inshallah.
