Tucker Carlson says Obama's Black church isn't really Christian

Right wing TV host Tucker Carlson claims that presumptive presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama(D-IL) isn't a real Christian because he goes to a Black church.

Video Here

Obama belongs to the "Unashamedly black and Unapologetically Christian" Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois.

And what, might you ask, is so un-Christian about Trinity United Church of Christ? Tucker is tut-tuting because Trinity United espouses a 12-point Black Value System.

CARLSON: So Barack Obama is a member of a church called Trinity United Church of Christ. It's a predominantly black church in Chicago, that espouses something called the "Black Value System," which includes calls for congregants to be "soldiers for black freedom" and a, quote, "disavowal of the pursuit of middleclassness." Now, it would seem to me, Tom, not to make a broad sweeping statement here, but a racially exclusive theology, a theology that ministers to one group of people, based on race, kind of contradicts the basic tenets of Christianity, and is worth talking about. Wouldn't you say?

And, again, a few seconds later...

CARLSON: Soldiers for black freedom? How about -- what about soldiers for freedom for everybody. What does that mean?

Tucker obviously hasn't read the first ethical precept of Trinity United which states:

Commitment of God “The God of our weary years” will give us the strength to give up prayerful passivism and become Black Christian Activist, soldiers for Black freedom and the dignity of all humankind.

Or, if Tucker has read the document, he's bearing false witness against his neighbor.

Just try to reconcile Carlson's attitude towards Obama's religion with his crocodile tears for religious tolerance in this interview with Catholic League president Bill Donohue (who calls the Edwards bloggers anti-Catholic brats).

Chris V - fair response, very fair actually.

Carlson has no academic or experiential knowledge of the Black church, nor has he demonstrated lay knowledge worthy of particular respect. When Carlson intones what Christianity "is" it's like me saying what art "is" - one blowhard's blow in each respective case.

In his anti-Obama rant, Carlson specifically emphasized that he was "qualified" - his word choice - to render an opinion on what Christianity is and is not, impliedly misrepresenting academic or seminary qualifications that he does not have (and that I definitely don't have either, unless you count B's 20 years ago in 12th grade religion with the Jesuits.) It's that self-puffery to which my dart was aimed.

I was really rather surprised to see recent polls--I'm afraid I've forgotten which state, but I think it was Illinois--showing Obama trailing at 14%, vs. 18% for Edwards, and Hillary in the high 20s.

>The specter of black militancy has been giving white people nightmares since well before Nat Turner. This is going to be a running theme.

Agreed Cass, it was the word "soldiers" that Carlson was counting on to sink the debate.

"a theology that ministers to one group of people, based on race, kind of contradicts the basic tenets of Christianity, and is worth talking about."

Let's try substituting "sexual orientation" for "race" and see what we've got there.

Carlson is an open sympathizer with state-sponsored terrorism. He publicly lauded France for its terrorist bombing attack on a civilian ship, killing a photographer named Fernando Periera.

I'm a forty year old white male and I'm perfectly comfortable with Barack Obama's choice of faith. I think Obama would make a great president. His book "The Audacity of Hope" should be required reading for anyone who wants to learn more about the problems that face America in the 21st century. Tucker Carlson is another ignorant neo-conservative pundit who lives in a fantasy world where global warming and climate change are only myths and more tax cuts for the wealthiest 1% are a public necessity.

Say this prayer: "Thank you God, for your healing gift of religion. "Nothing erases divisions and subdues animosity between cultural groups as effectively as the umpteen thousands of different versions of faith that You have seen fit to create. Your noodly appendage truly imparts love and acceptance onto every person it touches.

Carlson Turker is a dim wit and a racist
He doesn't let is guest talk.

I don't see how he stays
on TV. You made the statement Obama is a ignorant. Please have your facts befor you start talking

Wow, another blog-o-shit.

Obama is clearly unelectable. Worst thing for the Democratic Party because he is a party splitter. Matters not what his beliefs and bad politics are... Problem. Maybe he should have stuck with his Wahabi Islam. That way he could represent where he came from more truthfully. Oh… not to mention support of African Islam fails to remember that they kept black slaves until 1962, Saudi Arabia outlawed slavery, freeing about 10,000 slaves out of an estimated 15,000-30,000 and KILLED the rest. Slavery was ended by neighboring Qatar in 1952, the Yemen Arab Republic in 1962, the UAE in 1963, South Yemen in 1967, and Oman in 1970. In Africa itself.. well slavary is still a standard there. Yeah… There is a problem alright. The ignorant love to perpetuate ignorance. That and there is money in it! Obama bin ladin will leverage what ever he can... Is is not stupid...

S.A. Smith you dumb sack of shit first of all he is an American born citizen otherwise he couldn't run for president second do you have enough brains to under stand what Perdominantly means. Second of all the doctorine of Trinity is simillar to many southern presbitiarian churches with a few words changed third if you had enough brains you would realize that every culture has had shameful motives and judging by your last name I would definantly say you are from United Kingdom or French decent. Look what the British did in the first half of the 20th century they killed thousands of natives in their colonies. The Americans basically wipped out native american culture, and about every western nation in the world denied natives their freedom. Hell your going on about Muslims Palestine was a soveriegn country untill the U.N. had enough balls to make it Isreal and they clame they respect naional soverinity...yeah sure they do. Point being you are guilty of presentism you filthy prejudice pig.

I feel sorry for the people like George that thanks God for giving us thousands of faiths. There is only one true Church. Established by Christ himself in 33A.D. The first apostate church was started by a man in Rome, Boniface III in 606 A. D. started the ever popular roman catholic church by naming himself the universal bishop, Ha, then in 1520 A. D. in Germany Martin Luther started the Lutheran church, then in Switzerland
in 1536 A.D.John Calvin started presbyterian church, then
1550 A. D. in england Robert Browne started the congregational church, then in 1607 A. D. John Smythe started the baptist church, and so it goes down to the latest of the big fake is in 1872 A. D. when charles Russell started the Jehovah's witnesses> I don't know about everyone else but as for me and my house we will follow the original started by Jesus Christ himself to save all man kind, all the others are started by ordinary men....scary, that people rather follow man made religions than the only true church established by Christ him self, read about it in Matthew in new testament and read on and the Bible teaches you how to be added to the true Church and be saved, the rest are useless and fake.

Wow, you don't agree with someone so you attack his education level or better yet call him a racist. Or you might call him a facist or even worse, you could call him a conservative. If you disagree with someone, why don't you just tell us what you believe in or even better explain why you think it instead of the needless banter. I do not have a college degree either, but at least I can spell & have some ability to reason. If you think global warming is a problem, do your part to stop it-like cutting your power or fuel usage. If you think racism is a problem then quit labeling people as racist and get along with them.
