Wolfowitz threatened fellow Bankers

The Guardian reports that Paul Wolfowitz threatened to retaliate against Senior World Bank staffers if they continued to "attack" Wolfowitz over the lavish compensation package he negotiated for his girlfriend Shaha Riza:

An angry and bitter Paul Wolfowitz poured abuse and threatened retaliations on senior World Bank staff if his orders for pay rises and promotions for his partner were revealed, according to new details published last night.

Under fire for the lavish package given to Shaha Riza, a World Bank employee and Mr Wolfowitz's girlfriend when he became president, an official investigation into the controversy has found that Mr Wolfowitz broke bank rules and violated his own contract – setting off a struggle between US and European governments over Mr Wolfowitz's future.

Sounding more like a cast member of the Sopranos than an international leader, in testimony by one key witness Mr Wolfowitz declares: "If they fuck with me or Shaha, I have enough on them to fuck them too."

Wolfowitz is an utter disgrace and he needs to step down.

Good journalism by Richard Adams would have involved telling us the REAL context of Wolfowitz's remark, "If they fuck with me or Shaha, I have enough on them to fuck them too."

Instead, Richard Adams refers to a fictional TV show, "The Sopranos."

A good comment by Eric Jaffa would have involved telling us the REAL context of Wolfowitz's remark, "If they fuck with me or Shaha, I have enough on them to fuck them too."

Instead, Eric Jaffa prattles on about Richard Adams and "The Guardian."

On the contrary, Lindsay, I think Wolfowitz should cling to his position for at least another month, to be sure that all the really awful stuff comes out and to completely trash whatever is left of his reputation.

Same for Gonzales. The longer they hold on, the worse they look.

I don't know the context.

The World Bank uploaded their report in PDF format, which means that I can't do a computer search through it for specific text. I also don't know whether the remark is in the main report or one of the 17 annexes.

More context? Okay, here's more from the article:

The angry comments attributed to Mr Wolfowitz came from damning testimony by Xavier Coll, head of human resources at the bank, who provided investigators with his notes of a meeting with Mr Wolfowitz last year. The notes directly contradict Mr Wolfowitz's assertions that the details of Ms Riza's treatment were properly shared with senior bank officials.

In March last year, when a mention of Ms Riza's secondment outside the bank to avoid rules about partners was first published in the magazine US News & World Report, an angry Mr Wolfowitz accused Mr Coll of leaking the information.

According to Mr Coll's notes: "At the end of the conversation Mr Wolfowitz became increasingly agitated and said that he was 'tired of people ... attacking him' and 'you should get your friends to stop it'. Mr Wolfowitz said, 'If they fuck me or Shaha, I have enough on them to fuck them too'," naming several senior bank staff he felt were vulnerable.

An inspirational story of romance and passion. I only wish that someday I too shall fall so deeply in love with someone that I'm willing to thug for them. Who'd ever have thought: Spittle-boy Wolfie - gangsta of love.

P.S. Lindsay, a correction: The threats, according to the article, had to do with revealing the information about the pay raise to the public, not for resisting the raise itself.

Thank you.

Thanks, Janet.

Wolfowitz accused Coll of leaking information about Riza's compensation package to a reporter from US News and World Report. Only three people knew the details of the package. However, Wolfowitz rattles off a bunch of other names of Bank employees "friends" of Coll's whom he accuses of "attacking him" in public over the Riza package--which had already gone through at that point. So, he was threatening to fuck with his vocal critics, not just with whoever leaked the memo.

Does it matter if he was threatening the media or his staff because he has enough on them to fuck with them? Either way, he hardly comes off as a selfless public servant.

Yeah, I'm still trying to imagine a context in which Wolfies' Joe Pesci imitation would be exculpatory, but whatevah. In the interest of fairness and balance, here's Riza explaining her first meeting with Coll (annex 6):

Xavier Coll came to me in my room, in my office, and he told me then - and I'll be very happy to tell you, if you don't mind a little bit of not very nice language, exactly how he started his conversation. He was rather perplexed. But he came into my office and he started his conversation, and do excuse my language. I dodn't want to say my French because I didn't want to offend our French ED. But he told me, "Shaha, I did not come here to fuck you."

And I answered him, "I should hope not. I don't need you to be fucking me, as well."

Coll (annex 11) says, "I really find that to be quite unbelievable."

It's like a Tarrantino movie!

"Does Paul Wolfowitz look like a bitch to you?"

"N-no.."

"Then why are you trying to fuck him!"

It's great when they slip like this: It IS a cast from Soprano's running the place and the more that is revealed -- the better.
This is classic -- like when Jeb Bush spoke up about the 'dykes' and how he would take care of 'them' overheard by reporters when the investigation into the Rilya appearance was ongoing.
Shows their true colors and shockingly revealing about WHO they really are and how they never came off the playground lo the ethics class they snoozed through in Harvard and other places. They don't even PRETEND.

I don't have any money in US banks, why should I care if this rich fuck gives his girlfriend a job and get fired for it? Why is this even a talking point? Am I missing something? Or is it a de facto attack on all things conservative?

Your blog though Lindsay. But Wolfowitz topics are really boring and not worth talking about.

On a related note, Jerry Falwell is dead. Liberals everywhere are smoking pot, having non-marital and/or homosexual sex in celebration! Personally, I am basking in my completely depraved godless existence!

It's the *World* Bank, B-M, a fairly powerful institution.

Here is part of the World Bank mission statement:

--Each institution plays a different but supportive role in our mission of global poverty reduction and the improvement of living standards. The IBRD focuses on middle income and creditworthy poor countries, while IDA focuses on the poorest countries in the world. Together we provide low-interest loans, interest-free credit and grants to developing countries for education, health, infrastructure, communications and many other purposes.--

This has nothing to do with me or my problems. Nor does a guy giving a job or more money to a chick he's banging. How is this real news?

Liberals everywhere are smoking pot, having non-marital and/or homosexual sex in celebration!

Really? Where? Is there an address in New York I can go to?

Nice to see you posting over at Tom Tomorrow's place.

Wolfowitz needs to go suck on his comb.

FYI, the Coll interview in which he quotes Wolfowitz as threatening to "F" everybody is Annex 10. The quote appears at pp. 68-69. This info courtesy Obsidian Wings, http://tinyurl.com/2czqnb

we provide low-interest loans, interest-free credit and grants to developing countries for education, health, infrastructure, communications and many other purposes.--

This has nothing to do with me or my problems.

Where do terrorists, illegal immigrants, and illegal drugs come from? Countries where poor people have nothing to lose? No, they come from Sweden. You're right, the World Bank has nothing to do with you or your problems.

Cfrost, the World Bank and even real development agencies can do exactly nothing to curb terrorism. Bin Laden's followers aren't interested in development; the people who shelter them in Pakistan are the last people real development will ever reach for logistical reasons. Even illegal immigration, which unlike terrorism is a question of economic development, has more to do with American farm subsidies than with the World Bank.

Alon Levy: Bin Laden's followers aren't interested in development; the people who shelter them in Pakistan are the last people real development will ever reach for logistical reasons.

Not interested in development? Ah, that would explain why they have never expressed any interest in the ownership of Arab oil reserves.

Oh my God! I've fallen into Alon Levy World! The sky is green and the sheep are black!

Not interested in development? Ah, that would explain why they have never expressed any interest in the ownership of Arab oil reserves.

No, it would explain why they never spend their oil reserves on domestic programs the way Saudi Arabia does. The Taliban's Afghanistan wasn't a welfare state, or even a state where the government made much of an effort to fend off starvation.

But thanks for the snark. I appreciate it. It helps me remember why I don't read Pandagon.

"Where do terrorists, illegal immigrants, and illegal drugs come from? Countries where poor people have nothing to lose? No, they come from Sweden. You're right, the World Bank has nothing to do with you or your problems." - Cfrost

Well Cfrost, the fact that the Prez of the WB was hooking up the chick he was f'ing with money and perks in no way detracts from the the overall mission of the WB. That is why this is such a garbage "story".

As for your assertion that the WB can "fix" these poor countries where you allege that terrorsists feed on the poor and weak, well, sir/ma'am, you are so misguided that I am almost speechless. But not totally. Terrorism will NOT be curbed by the WB aiding poor underdeveloped countries. Terrorism is based a fanatical view of religion or beliefs that there is good in murdering people in the name of your cause. These people drink some funky kool-aid that fucks up there ability to reason. They will not be changed or stopped by the WB!

Ajay, it is not often that I agree with or defend Alon Levy, but the point above that you attack is accurate. Look at Syria, Iran, Libya, Pakistan, Somalia, Ethiopia. These are radical muslim strongholds with no interest in social or economic development. That would hinder the gov't ability to rule with an iron fist. Saudi and UAE and Kuwait are greedy and have accepted that they have money and power in their oil. They are a bit more lax, albeit not a lot, in their adoption of western ideologies.

So I agree with Alon on this point. Despite your snark!
