Barry L. Beyerstein (1947-2007)

Dad with Book, originally uploaded by Lindsay Beyerstein.

This is the last picture I took of my father, who died on June 25th. The picture shows him unwrapping a 60th birthday present. It was taken less than a month before.

Quite simply, I adored my father. He was among the most ethical people I have ever known. I don't think it's an accident that he was also one of the most fulfilled people I've had occasion to meet.

Dad was a scholar, an activist, and a devoted family man.

Dad loved all knowledge, no matter how arcane or obscure. He believed in the power of reason, compassion, and humility. He lived a life of service.

I loved and respected him so much. It's a rare person who could leave so little unsaid or unfinished, despite having his life cut short so suddenly.

I was completely shocked today when a quick search for my old SFU professors turned up this news. Barry Beyerstein was my favorite prof at SFU. He is one of the few I remember, and I admired him very much.
I took several classes with him and I loved every minute of them. I learned a lot from him. Actually I am not sure how he would have felt about this but I managed to come through them with my own spiritual (Pagan) beliefs intact. I just learned to keep them separate from science and realized that I choose to believe in them because it feels good to, whether or not there is something "real" behind them. I also learned a great deal of skepticism from him--yes a spiritual skeptic, weird but true. I learned to look at things from more than one perspective and never just accept something because other people say its true.
I will always remember him. He is one of the influences that made me who I am today.
