B&H Photo-Video settles discrimination suit
The world famous New York camera emporium B&H Photo-Video will pay $4.3 million to settle a discrimination suit filed by the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on behalf of Hispanic warehouse workers who say they were paid less than their non-Hispanic colleagues. [AP]
Damn that is ugly!

Well, this exemplifies one ridiculous aspect of this website: sheer randomness. OK, a link to a story about some random Hispanics in NYC winning a small potatoes lawsuit. What else has Porofessor Beyerstein taugh us this week? Some random relatives of equally random bloogers die, we care because? Oh becaues we agree with the politics of the blog writers, let's all grieve together. A painfully unfunny "parody." Link to story, some random Iraqi newpaper reporter dies. Some silly right wing bint decides not to be on silly TV show. Picture of Al gore looking self-safisfied. Some random chick has a random science blog, yay for science blogs written by womyn! And that's it for pretty much a full week. no insight, no content, just random snippets, most of it non-sense. Oh and a link to an op-ed piece which in about 200 words repeats about 1/100 of what ew all know is wrong about the war.

Milo, please provide a link to your blog where things are done properly.
A word of advice that might do you some good: Women, as a rule will cease listening the instant you use the word "bint". Kind of like the way black people just sort of shut down and refuse to listen, even though what you're saying is, as usual, coruscatingly brilliant, as soon as you say something like "nigger", "coon", "gator bait" or "porch monkey".

Damn cfrost you beat me to the punch on the link request.
Furthermore Milo, trying to sound intelligent and being intelligent are two completely different things. Mind you I am no genius, definitely not on LB's level, but your post was almost painful to read due to typo's. May I suggest that you take your dick beaters and do some practice on the keyboard instead before posting again.

This blog is so worthless and pointless that I can't stop reading it! Won't someone please help me?

If you are a photographer in the NYC area, then B & H is a big part of your world, and a story like this is a big deal. It really is on-topic for this blog.

How dare you Tom? Milorad obviously knows what it is talking about.
There is no room here for logic and rational reasoning!

I'm a professional photographer and NOT in the NYC area, but pretty much all of my equipment is bought through B&H. So I found this very interesting.
Seeing that Lindsay is a photographer in NYC (where B&H takes up an entire block of Manhattan, so I'm told) I can see exactly why she would find it interesting enough to post.

Lindsay, can I suggest that you consider banning certain people from posting to this blog? Recently, a good number of threads have been hijacked by trolls. I would be loathe to suggest banning someone based on their viewpoint, and it's often difficult to tell whether a poster is just a disagreeable person with a different opinion, or a genuine troll. But it seems pretty clear that Mary and Milo are both just out to generate outrage, and not to contribute anything. Mary has explicitly boasted about being a troll, and expressed glee at the reactions she gets; it's pretty difficult for me to think that she actually believes that it makes sense to criticize/mock Bruce and his wife for seeking fertility treatment. And when Milo drops into every thread, including ones expressing sympathy for friends who have just lost relatives, with "Bah. Thes is stopid. Youg Amerccins are so dum. You are a c***," it's pretty clear that his only goal is to get a reaction.
Based on what I've seen on other blogs, this is a win-win situation. We could have discussions that aren't completely filled with garbage. And the trolls could boast about how they were banned from a blog because the weaklings and dummies who regularly frequent the blog are intolerant of different viewpoints, and unable to deal with their insightful criticisms. Last month, when you asked Mary (then posting as "Anonymous") to cut down on her multiple giant posts, she immediately shouted out that she was being censored and forced to leave, which she then did so. From this, I'm guessing that she's pretty eager to be "persecuted." From what I can tell, they feel like this is some great moral victory, so why not just give them what they want?
Again, I wouldn't want to censor anyone based on viewpoint. But when the posters are pretty obviously genuine trolls, and not just trolls in the sense of "I diagree with you, so you're a troll," I don't see a problem.

Wow, that is big. (As you say, justified because of your photographer's interest. And yes, David G, I believe the B&H storefront does indeed take up a city block over on 34th and 9th Ave or thereabouts.)
The odd thing is that the federal EEOC decided to step in on this one and not the NYS equal-opps people.

You might be right Autumn Harvest; but then again, it is kind of fun to shoot fish in a barrel. Not that that gets a discussion anywhere.

I guess Lindsay subscribes to the "Give 'em enough rope" school of thread management. In Mary's case, I'd say it worked like a charm.

I think it is the first time cfrost and I ever stood on the same side of the line drawn in the sand.
Posted by: Dave | October 17, 2007 at 02:06 PM
Or short of banning people you could just do like PZ and have them disemvowelled.

Cfrost, and Dave, you guys have a weird idea of "fun." But it just warms my heart to see you guys on the same side. Could this be the start of a beautiful friendship?
Probably not.

Doesn't surprise me that B&H would exhibit racist behavior.
Don't you think all fundies, regardless of religion show racism either overtly or covertly?
I do.

Milo, this is a non-random post.
Lindsay has posted labor related stories in the past.
B&H is a BIG photography supplier (esp. in the higher end market for lens filters, their oversized colorgrads are about the best on the market).
So this touches a pair of issues.
As for the callous disregard you have for other people's pain, we care because those other bloggers are 1: people, and 2: friends of ours (if only by virtue of the sense of intimacy sharing on the net gives us).
That you 1: fail to see that, and 2: deign to mock speaks more of your failings than it does of Lindsays; because a blog is a place to publish what one cares about. If you don't care about it, that's fine, but to try an belittle someone else's choice of issues, it's mean-spirited and petty-minded.

Cfrost, and Dave, you guys have a weird idea of "fun." But it just warms my heart to see you guys on the same side.
I may have disagreements or differences of opinion with Dave, or with Phantom, or B-Money to cite three commenters on LB’s blog that take a generally conservative point of view, but I have never thought their comments to be just plain patently offensive like those of Milo’s, or those of Mary’s regarding someone else’s autistic children. The three first mentioned, might sometimes get testy and/or write something in haste that might be better said after more consideration, as do I. Argument is what I like about this blog. It’s not just an endless string of snark from people taking one or the other side.
I have friends that are frankly and unapologetically reactionary. I just spent a couple of weeks on vacation with one and had a totally fabulous time. If Dave, Phantom, or B-Money should find their way to Oregon/Washington, I’d be delighted to meet you folks. Milo on the other hand, well, he seems to loathe Americans, and, as far as I’m concerned, I’m glad he’s apparently not likely to show up on this continent. I’ll go look for Nurse Ratched, er, Mary, if I decide to take up serious masochism.
