McCain VP pick Sarah Palin's ethics scandal

John McCain picked a fellow "maverick" for a running mate: Alaska governor Sarah Palin.

Josh Marshall explains:

As mentioned earlier, Gov. Palin is embroiled in her own trooper-gate scandal up in Alaska. In short, she's accused of using her pull as governor to get her ex-brother-in-law fired as a state trooper. The brother-in-law is embroiled in an ugly divorce and custody with Palin's sister. And after his boss wouldn't fire the brother-in-law, she fired the boss. Palin originally insisted there was nothing to the story. More recently, she was forced to admit the one of her top deputies had pushed to get the guy fired.

Here's one our recent reports on the story.  And we'll be bringing you an updated report shortly.

Palin initially claimed that no one in her administration pressured anyone to fire her ex-brother-in-law's boss. Now, she admits that one of her staffers made a call, trying to get the boss canned:

At least Barack Obama had the good sense not to pick Eliot Spitzer as his running mate.

A tip of the hat to you for inserting some Hawaiian language here. Even though you're wrong on all the facts, that is a cool thing to do.

Bruddah Iz forever!

Ah oops, Palin's in even deeper trouble, it would seem:

Palin's Lobbyist Linked To Jack Abramoff

As Mayor of Wasilla, Palin oversaw the hiring of lobbyist Steven Silver to help win earmarks. Who is Silver? He appears to have been part of "Team Abramoff," working on Native American and gambling issues for the now-imprisoned lobbyist's firm.

Another headline: Silver Helped Wasilla Win Huge Earmarks

I thought throwing ridiculous attacks hoping one would stick was a purely Republican tactic.

What, the hiring of a lobbyist to help win earmarks is ridiculous?

Sounds pretty serious to me.

So does everything else that is coming to light about her.

Palin is too serious of a mistake to let anywhere near the levers of power, even in Alaska.

I thought throwing ridiculous attacks hoping one would stick was a purely Republican tactic.

Alon, what gave you that impression?

Palin scored outsized earmarks for Wasilla but she's now being spun by the McCain folks as an anti-earmark crusader. The meme was that Obama lacked experience, but now the spin is that experience isn't all that important. Team McCain clearly didn't do their homework with respect to Bristol Palin (and they sure as hell didn't talk to her boyfriend), but now the spin is that they knew all along and everybody's pleased as punch. They were also evidently oblivious of Palin's involvement in a crackpot Alaskan secessionist group, but now that's being spun as being just part of her feisty “maverick” personality. Etc.

I've got chickens that are smart enough to see through all that, but we're looking to get that crucial one percent of the vote that makes all the difference, we're not looking for smart.

Obama does indeed lack experience, and has virtually no political or even life experience as compared to his top of the ticket opponent.

And Palin accomplished more in her two years as governor than Obama did in his years as community organizer et al.

Underestimate her at your own risk.

And Phantom Homer, you're basing this one what? What did Palin "accomplish" as governor?

You mean supporting that bridge to nowhere?

Yeah, that was quite a feather in her cap.

How about being a member of s secessionist militia party?

Trying to get books banned from libraries?

She DID get some people fired in that whole troopergate thing, and when she was mayor, she nearly tripled the budget, largely from borrowing federal funds and sticking the taxpayers with massive longterm debt (typical conservative).

So Palin accomplished more in 20 months as governor than Liddy Dole did in 20 years of service, that's why McCain chose Palin over Dole?

Or how about Olympia Snow?

What has she done as a governor that has topped Romney? Huckabee? Lieberman? Pawlenty? Ridge?

Nothing. She hasn't done anything of note besides being a hideous choice for VP.

She can't hold a candle to Obama.

And as far as what McCain has accomplished? What dodging jail time for the Keating Five? Voting with W 95% of the time? Iraq? 100/1000/10,000 years of occupation? Wanting to get in a shooting war w/Russia? Flipping and flopping like a $7 crack whore on abortion or immigration or stem cell research? How about picking Sarah Palin as his running-mate based on a single, fifteen minute phone call without ANY vetting? Yeah, that's one humdinger of an accomplishment.

McCain is a tremendous fuck up, and this whole, taking a flier on a completely un-vetted hack like Sarah Palin just shows how bad of a choice he would be.

Underestimate her at your own risk

I'm definitely not going to underestimate (or misunderestimate in Dubyaspeak) her talent at self-promotion. A short meeting and a single interview and she gets the #2 job in the world's most powerful empire? Wow.

She doesn;t have the job yet thank god.

And to hear the way conservatives were caterwauling and screaming like stuck pigs while they questioned Barak & Michelle Obama's patriotism ... what if either of them had been a member of a political party whose founder said "I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions," and also said "[T]he fires of Hell are glaciers compared to my hate for the American government."

The AIP's motto is "Alaska First -- Alaska Always."

Compare that motto with McCain's: "Country First"

So which one is it Sarah?

I still love Sarah Palin even if there are tons of Sarah Palin Scandal, There will always be scandals but not always good candidates

You know palin is a great choice when obama freaks talk negative about her. Obama cant win so all the african americans can start rioting now. I havent heard anything but attacks from both partys. Vote independent!!

I think what astounds me the most, is how easy it is for one side to always blame the other side. Rep's pointing fingers, Dem's doing the same. Grow up! You're not in grade school, so stop acting like it.

This is what think As long as the parties are constantly bickering and trying to veto the others, we are a screwed nation. This is supposed to be American, The UNITED States and our government is not ours any more. It belongs to ones that have the money to go to the right colleges and know the right people.

To be really united, we need to get back to the basics, "government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." And it isn't and hasn't been for a long time.

I see it this way. Both sides are at fault and both sides NEED to pull their collective heads outta their butts, long enough to take care of this country. Quit playing these games that effect hundreds of thousands of peoples lives, homes, jobs and dreams.

But those are only my thoughts.

Oh and everyone else, it's your right to do it, but I wish you'd grow up too and realize how lucky are to be in this country, so I use my right to say, quit your whining.
