Obama to close Guantanamo, ban torture

Close Guantanamo, originally uploaded by Lindsay Beyerstein.

Spencer Ackerman reports on today's four bold executive orders by Barack Obama:

President Barack Obama took a major step toward undoing the interrogation and detention policies of the Bush administration on Thursday, issuing four executive orders that lay out an unequivocal path to closing the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, constructing a new legal and policy architecture for terrorism detainees, and ending the CIA’s so-called “enhanced interrogation” regime.

Both civil libertarians and ex-CIA officials involved in interrogations and detentions policies hailed the changes. [...]

Say thanks to Obama with a form at the ACLU website.

Secretary Gates obviously didn't quite get the whole message, in a news clip from yesterday he said, and I quote,

journalist: "Mr Secretary was the intelligence gained from detainees at Gitmo worth the International condemnation"?

Gates:"That's a net assessment that I don't think I'm in a position to make".

In the Secretaries defense, Gates was secreted away somewhere during the inauguration, maybe he didn't have access to the tee vee or was otherwise occupied (as in disinterested). Seems to me he needs to get on the same page as his Commander in Chief or just get on, as in out.

I honestly didn't think this would come so quickly, if at all--campaign promises or no campaign promises. I'm delighted to have been wrong about that, and I hope that my skepticism about Obama on other fronts will soon prove to be equally misplaced.

Obama is smart on so many levels for ordering the closure of Guantanamo. It has been a long time coming -- well done Mr. President.

Right on!

Stop the italics!

Stop the italics!

I'm sorry, I thought italic was an accepted method of distinguishing quotations from the rest of text. Am I missing something here, is it allergies or something psychological?

uuhhem, anything wrong with the majik word? Just noticing

My guess: you forgot to close the italic tag, which meant that all comments after yours were entirely italic. Phantom complained about it. Lindsay edited your comment to close the italic tag, so the thread went back to normal, but didn't delete Phantom's comment.

Now we'll see if the CIA or whatever shadowy groups that conduct torture and illegal detentions in our name just move torture, etc. off the books and out of sight.

I'm guardedly optimistic, but we've had a long history of intelligence abuses and so far no one is proposing anything like Church Committee hearings, much less punishment for the BushCo dogs that were responsible for the last eight years of medieval bullshit.

Thanks for that explanation. I'll be more careful in the future. I'm just learning, commenting can be like playing with a loaded gun when you don't how it works (I'm not promoting guns). I'm glad I asked, now I learned something, already today, I feel cautiously, inspired.

I tried to stop the italics by putting the close italic symbol at the end of a comment but that did not work

How should you do it? Close symbol at the beginning

Lets find out

Lets try to create an italic problem right now

Is there an italic problem?

Very good. There was a problem. Now this, by putting the close italic thing first should solve it.

Mission accomplished.

Very good. There was a problem. Now this, by putting the close italic thing first should solve it.

Mission not accomplished?

Can create a problem but only LB can fix it?

Oh hell.

Did you fix it, or was this a delayed reaction by typepad of my putting the close italic command in

Nothing was fixed as far as I can tell.

Swear to God

When I looked at it earlier today, from a computer that I don't normally use, there were no italics in the last few comments

This site is inhabited by typepad gremlins.

Since about kindergarten or so, I haven’t heard the word “gremlin” without recalling this.

This thread is impacted by the Italic virus, but the subsequent one is not.

I just had to try.

I just had to try again.

this is retarted, obama should not close guantanamo.
