Good profile of transgendered legislative aide Diego Sanchez

The Hill has a touching profile of Barney Frank's newest legislative aide, Diego Sanchez. Sanchez, a 51-year-old man, was born female.

He calls his parents his heroes for being so supportive and accepting. It's especially remarkable that his parents were so open-minded about their transgendered child over four decades ago:

“I was born wrong,” Sanchez remembers saying as a 5-year-old. Instead of the expected scolding, Sanchez’s parents embraced him.

The “greatest heroes” of Sanchez’s life raised their child as both a boy and a girl. “My parents dually socialized me,” Sanchez said. “My dad socialized me as a boy and taught me all the things I needed to know, and my mother socialized me as a girl, so that however I worked it out, I would not be without lessons that would sustain my life.”

Transadvocate.com has more details about Sanchez's career. The spring before he joined Frank's staff as a senior legislative adviser, Sanchez became the first openly transgendered person to serve on the DNC Platform Committee.
