Phagwah is a Hindu new year's festival with Indo Caribbean roots. Revelers usher in the new year by dousing each other with brightly colored powdered dye.

Rebecca Smeyne has a great photo essay in the Village Voice about last weekend's Phagwah celebrations in Richmond Hill, Queens and their sexy, silly, family party ambience.

Comments

There's a really sweet, winning short film called "Colorforms" whose central sequence is set at a Phagwah celebration, but to say any more would be a spoiler. Which would be a pity, since the film is well worth seeking out.
